Balakai Project Training
The Balakai Social Project of the Dara Foundation is the project of assistance to Almaty medical establishments. The project aims to improve local armamentarium and develop knowledge of domestic health care workforce.

From September 19 to September 30, 2009 G T Abdulayeva and D K Saudabayeva, the doctors of the Scientific Center for Pediatrics and Surgery of the Ministry of Health of Kazakhstan, were sent to Washington to get training on use of peripheral inserted central catheters (PICC) for treatment of newborns.

The peripheral inserted central catheters (PICC):

- enable to have long venous access which helps to prevent repeated venous punctures;

- are well tolerated even by premature low-birth--weight infants thanks to catheter flexibility;

- reduce the risk related to injury of the vessel walls thanks to easy fixation with wings and extensions;

- is X-RAY contract.

The training was held in the Children's National Medical Center (within 4 days) and George Washington Clinic (within 1 day). "The Children's National Medical Center is a multi-field hospital that is one of the best top clinics of America. The Center treats children with physical, surgical, and oncohematological pathologies on a routine and immediate basis. Also the Center delivers medical aid to newborns that need surgical correction and nurses extremely low-birth-weight infants (500 g). In addition, it is a big center on training of medical students, trainee doctors, and residents. Our practice in the Washington National Center was very demonstrative in terms of improving the work of intensive care units for newborn survival thanks to which child disability and mortality must be decreased. We listened to lectures on the PICC advantages, indications and contraindications for their installation, and rules and methods of PICC installation and monitoring. We express our great gratitude to the Dara Foundation for the opportunity to get the excellent training on delivery of care to newborns and extremely low-birth-weight infants," - G T Abdulayeva and D K Saudabayeva say in their trip report.

The Dara Foundation is confident that this training will significantly change unfavorable status of newborns since G T Abdulayeva and D K Saudabayeva, the top specialists of the Scientific Center for Pediatrics and Surgery of the Ministry of Health of Kazakhstan, are intended to distribute the obtained knowledge providing free-of-charge training for intensive care units of Kazakhstan.
